What is the Preston Bus M-Tickets app and where can I get it?

The app allows you to buy and load bus tickets on your phone or tablet. It is available to download FREE on Google Play™ (Android devices) and on the App Store (iPhone and iPad).

You then just show the M-Ticket on your phone or tablet to the driver and they will accept it just like any other ticket. It replaces the paper ticket as no ticket will be issued by the driver, although M-Tickets will be checked for validity.

Once you have decided to buy an M-Ticket, you will be asked to provide your payment card details. Once this is done, the M-Ticket will go into your M-Ticket wallet until you want to use it at which point you activate it.

The details of how long the ticket is valid for will appear on the M-Ticket on the phone.

When the M-Ticket expires it will automatically go into the ‘expired’ area of the wallet but cannot be used again like an active M-Ticket.

We strongly recommend that you create an account with us on the app. If your phone is lost or damaged, this will allow us to transfer your tickets to a new device. However, creating an account is not a requirement to purchasing a ticket.

Back to questions

How do M-Tickets work?

Once downloaded and purchased, your M-Tickets will appear as ‘purchased’ in your Ticket Wallet.

When you want to use one, choose the ticket you want (they are listed from oldest at the top to newest at the bottom) and select ‘Activate’ – you will be asked to confirm this instruction.

When a ticket is activated, the app will generate a moving image ticket on your phone’s screen; this will stay active for the rest of your journey.

You need to show this to the driver when you get on the bus so they can check the M-Ticket is valid.

Back to questions

Do I need an internet connection to use M-Tickets?

You need an internet connection to purchase a ticket. The app also needs to communicate with our system to keep itself up to date when you’re out and about. You do not need an internet connection to activate an already purchased ticket – so a poor phone signal where you board a bus should not be a problem. Please note that the app is not designed to work with Wi-Fi only devices such as tablets and iPods.

Back to questions

Which mobile phones can I use?

iPhone and Android devices are both supported by the app. For iPhone users your operating system needs to be iOS 9.0 or higher and for Android users your operating system needs to be 4.4 or higher.

Back to questions

Does it matter which mobile network I use?

No, the app can be used across all mobile networks.

Back to questions

What happens if an inspector needs to check my ticket?

The inspector will ask you to display your activated ticket, and will ask you to display the barcode on the ticket.

Back to questions

Can I transfer my tickets to another phone?

M-Tickets are locked to the phone on which they are purchased. If you change your handset or phone number, we can transfer the ticket for you. Please download the app to the new phone and contact us by emailing mticketing@rotala.co.uk with your name and contact phone number and we will transfer the tickets over.

Back to questions

Can more than one customer travel on one M-Ticket?

No, only one person can travel per M-Ticket with the exception of Family tickets on which up to 5 people can travel, two of which can be adults.

Back to questions

My phone battery ran out before I could show my M-Ticket to the bus driver.

It is your responsibility to ensure that your phone has enough battery power to be able to show a valid M-Ticket to the driver, and also any inspector throughout your journey. If you cannot do this, you will need to buy a ticket from the driver using cash.
